There
a sunbeam on a blade of grass
tiny drops of gold
sharp and jagged edges
but beautiful to behold
I found them all around me
lying in places I didn’t expect
I gathered them up, the little pieces heavy,
as they slipped through my fingers down my dress
What is this gold I thought?
What is this purpose?
And my heart spoke out
“It’s for the mothers whose children have gone on before us”
For the weight they feel
and for each day they face
For a heart still with room for comfort and grace
For bits of gold that have fallen off little wings,
to form the street you will walk to see them again
The rest of us see you
and remember your pain
We gather up gold bits
and we send God your name
We remember you today
“We Remember You Today” is written in honor of all the mothers who are missing a child today, on Mother’s Day, and every day.
