The Virginia Diner
If you visit the website for the Virginia Diner, you will read “ninety years. millions served. one famous diner.” All I knew was that the sign on the highway said the restaurant had been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives with Guy Fieri, and my girls and I were starving and tired of driving. The diner has more history than I could imagine. It dates back to 1929! It started in a refurbished Sussex, Surry, and Southampton Railroad car. Located in Wakefield, the Virginia Diner is proud to be known as “The Peanut Capital of the World.” A trip to the Virginia Diner was just what we needed to break up our drive on a road trip.
Good Food & Good Atmosphere
The atmosphere here is casual. Dress down or dress up, no one will care. You can choose something great from the menu, or go all in with the buffet. For our first visit, we decided to order from the menu. Everything was great and all of us left with our bellies full. The girls had fried chicken bites and mini cheeseburgers. I went with the BBQ and the Pimento Puppies. The guy across from us ordered the Virginia Country Ham biscuits and I was trying not to be nosey, but they looked fantastic.
The staff was friendly, the bathrooms were clean, and the small gift shop was a great place to pick up something for my mom and my husband. My mom said the cheese straws were good. The next time we visit, I’ve got to try some “World Famous Peanut Pie” or just grab some peanuts to go in the gifts shop. I can’t imagine the peanut pie can beat pecan, but after all, it’s a visit to the peanut capital! If peanuts are not your thing, don’t worry. You can also try a milkshake, peach cobbler, apple pie, southern chess pie, or banana pudding.
