Black Klansman

Race, Hate, and the Undercover Investigation of a Lifetime

Black Klansman was published in 2014 and later turned into a movie. Ron Stallworth’s account never made it into my hands until I discovered it in a Little Library box at the park. Black Klansman, the true story of a black police officer – the first black detective in the history of the Colorado Springs Police Department – who infiltrates the KKK, immediately caught my eye. This was a quick read for me because it kept my attention throughout.

KKK

Stallworth writes, “It’s important to remember that this was the 1970s, a period of tremendous political and civil unrest in our nation. Protest bombings in America were commonplace, especially in hard-hit cities like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco” (55). The history he includes was interesting, and the photo evidence really compelling. For example, on the KKK membership card I wasn’t surprised to see that number one of the personal code pledge was “to untiringly work for the preservation, protection, and advancement of the White race.” I was a bit surprised by numbers three and six. Number three read “to obey all orders from officers of the Empire.” Number six was to “fulfill social, fraternal, and financial obligations to this order as long as I live.”

This novel is worth reading. Stallworth gives inside information into the KKK, as well as other groups that were operating at the same time. You can find your copy here, and support this blog at the same time.
